The Emmer was dammed here at the end of the 1970s, and by the early 1980s the reservoir below Schieder-Schwalenberg had been finished as a recreation area; flood protection for the town of Lügde downstream was the main reason for building it. The lake runs about 3.1 kilometres long and 350 metres across at its widest. Water-sports clubs are based on its shores, and the grounds carry a summer programme of concerts and open-air cinema.
