The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in Bratislava in 1929 as the Radiojournal orchestra, with František Dyk as its first chief conductor. Its expansion was closely associated with Alexander Moyzes, who directed the broadcaster's music department and helped develop a full symphonic ensemble. Ľudovít Rajter, Ladislav Slovák and Ondrej Lenárd were among the conductors who shaped its subsequent history. Concert performances and studio work have remained complementary parts of its activity. Its recordings have appeared on Opus, Supraphon, Naxos, Marco Polo and other labels, alongside film-music projects. The orchestra has also worked with international soloists including Edita Gruberová, José Carreras and Emmanuel Pahud. Founded in 1929 to serve Slovak Radio in Bratislava, the orchestra tied itself early to the music of Alexander Moyzes, Eugen Suchon and Jan Cikker, whose scores it introduced and recorded. Frantisek Dyk was its first chief conductor; Ludovit Rajter, Ladislav Slovak, Bystrik Rezucha, Ondrej Lenard and Robert Stankovsky followed, and Lenard returned to the post in 2019. Abroad it is known mainly through broadcasts and a long catalogue made for Naxos.
