Money made in Argentina finished this theatre. Joaquín Jofre y Maristany, a Ferrol businessman returned from the River Plate, subscribed for shares in 1889 in a building that had been stalled for years, and the house opened on 19 May 1892 with Calderón's El alcalde de Zalamea. Several hands had shaped the plans before his — Marcelino Sors, with cost-cutting revisions by the naval engineer Andrés Comerma. Rodolfo Ucha Piñeiro gave it a modernista façade in 1921, hanging theatrical masks above the porch. Rehabilitation begun in 2001 returned it to the city in December 2005, and it remains Ferrol's principal stage for drama, concerts and touring opera.
