Écija's municipal theatre stands on calle Comedias, on the site of an eighteenth-century corral de comedias that burned down in 1937. The town's own architect, José Granados de la Vega — who had built the Colombia and Guatemala pavilions for Seville's Ibero-American Exposition — rebuilt it in 1939 in art déco, straight lines outside and curves within. A restoration completed in 1999 at a cost of close to three million euros went back over the interior, keeping the volumes of the original and its ship's-rail balustrades.
