Neoclassical down to the six Doric columns of its portico, the Teatro Principal was designed by the alicantino Emilio Jover Perrón and opened on 25 September 1847 with the romantic drama Guzmán el Bueno; during building it had been called simply the new theatre, to distinguish it from the old one. Part of the house was destroyed on 28 February 1939, and Juan Vidal Ramos rebuilt it over the two years that followed. Stage and machinery were enlarged again between 1985 and 1992. It stands on the square named for Ruperto Chapí and remains Alicante's principal house for opera, concerts and drama.
