Murcia's Teatro Romea opened in 1862 as the Teatro de los Infantes and later took the name of the actor Julian Romea. Fires in 1877 and 1899 led to successive reconstructions by Justo Millan; the theatre reopened in 1880 and again on 16 February 1901. Its eclectic facade includes busts of Beethoven, Mozart and Liszt. A further restoration in the 1980s culminated in its reopening by Queen Sofia in 1988. The building remains a setting for drama and other performing arts in central Murcia.
