Youth Palace, Red Hall

Pristina's centre is dominated by a low, angular mass of concrete and glass, a landmark of late Yugoslav architecture whose smaller rooms have outlived its grandest one. The Red Hall is the city's regular concert space, taking orchestral and choral programmes — the New Year concerts among them — that in most capitals would belong to a purpose-built philharmonic house. The complex has had a difficult life: fire tore through it in 2000, the great arena has stood out of use since, and refurbishment has come in modest instalments. The music has continued regardless, in the hall that still works.
