Biography
A Russian by nationality, Alexander Baranov was born in Ruse in 1976 and came to singing from the clarinet: he studied that instrument at the Veselin Stoyanov school of arts in his native city, then read music pedagogy at the University of Veliko Tarnovo and trained the voice at New Bulgarian University between 2007 and 2009. He joined the Bulgarian National Radio Mixed Choir in 2011 and became an artist-soloist of the State Opera Ruse in 2012, adding work with the State Opera Plovdiv from 2017. His parts run through Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore, Mozart's Die Zauberflote, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail and Le nozze di Figaro, Verdi's Falstaff and Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann, with Gastone in La traviata and the musicals My Fair Lady and The Phantom of the Opera; he was in the Ruse cast of Der Rosenkavalier in March 2017 beside Marie-Luise Dressen and Rodrigo Trosino, and has toured with the company in Germany, Spain, France, Norway and Austria. Tamino, Ferrando and Don Ottavio are among the Mozart parts he sings, with Zinovy Izmailov beside them, and the tenor solo in Orff's Carmina Burana in the concert repertoire.
