Boyko Tsvetanov

Boyko Tsvetanov joined the Zurich Opera ensemble in 1991. Born in Sofia in 1955 and trained at the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music with Chavdar Hadjiev, he sang at the Sofia National Opera from 1982, took third prize at the Bilbao international competition in 1988, and in 1991 joined the ensemble of the Zurich Opera. His studies continued long past the conservatoire: with Boris Christoff in Rome, with Margarita Lilova in Vienna, and with Carlo Bergonzi at the Verdi academy in Busseto. His roles include Verdi's Manrico and Radames and Calaf in Puccini's Turandot. State Opera Varna announced his debut as Otello for 18 February 2016; he marked his seventieth birthday in 2025. Abroad he has also been billed as Boiko Zvetanov, and Cavaradossi, Canio and Arnold in Guillaume Tell belong to his roles beside the Verdi and Puccini parts already named. At Bilbao in 1988 he also received a prize for singing in Basque.
