Biography
A flautist with the opera company in Bordeaux, François Borne composed the Fantaisie brillante sur Carmen, which draws Bizet's themes into a compact sequence of lyrical paraphrase and display variation. Borne also worked on the instrument itself during a period of fast mechanical change, contributing to a divided E key intended to steady the production of the high E. He taught at the conservatory in Toulouse, and the work on the instrument was done with the maker Djalma Julliot. A second operatic fantasia, on Meyerbeer's L'Africaine, also came from him. His Ballade et Danse des Lutins of 1886 was dedicated to Paul Taffanel.
