Composer
Biography
Juan Bautista Vert Carbonell composed zarzuelas. Born at Carcaixent and educated in Valencia and afterwards in Madrid, he began on his own with Las vírgenes paganas and El Versalles madrileño. After the First World War he joined forces with the Galician composer Reveriano Soutullo, the beginning of a collaboration that lasted until Vert’s death. La leyenda del beso, El último romántico and La del Soto del Parral came out of it, the last premiered in 1927. He died in Madrid in 1931; Soutullo followed a year later. Brought up at Ontinyent, he studied with Enrique Casanova and Manuel Ferrando before the conservatories of Valencia and Madrid, where Emilio Vega taught him. The partnership with Soutullo began in 1919 and produced El capricho de una reina among the rest, and at his death La maja serrana was left unfinished.
