La del Soto del Parral reached the stage of the Teatro de La Latina in Madrid on 26 October 1927, with music written jointly by Reveriano Soutullo and Juan Vert to a libretto by Anselmo Cuadrado Carreño and Luis Fernández de Sevilla. The pair had already had a hit with La leyenda del beso and worked together until Vert's death in 1931. The story is set among Castilian villagers, and the tenor romanza — the miller Germán's confession of his love — became the number that carried the zarzuela into the concert repertoire.
