Svetozar Rangelov

A bass heard with the Sofia National Opera from 2002, Svetozar Rangelov sang in the company's Faust and travelled with the production to Solothurn, where it was given out of doors; the same opera took him to Rousse. Emil Ugrinov and Rumiana Petrova were among the colleagues in those casts. Born in Sofia, Rangelov studied singing until 1995 at the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music with Assen Selimski, won a first prize that year in the Georgi Zlatev-Cherkin competition, and made his stage debut as Don Basilio, a part he has sung more than fifty times. He joined the Sofia company in 1996 and has carried over thirty-five bass roles, among them Boris Godunov, Don Quichotte, Attila, Oroveso, Philip II and the Grand Inquisitor, Timur, Ramfis and Gremin. France took him from 1998 onward — Toulon, the Opéra Comique, the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, Limoges. In 2000 he sang Ramfis in Brussels and Gremin at the Rome opera, in 2002 Fiesco at the Trapani festival, in 2005 Méphistophélès in São Paulo, and in 2013–2014 the four villains of Les contes d'Hoffmann in Barcelona.
