Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 was, in fact, his third attempt at a concerto for the instrument. It followed an unpublished work from 1784 and the concerto now known as No. 2. The two published concertos were composed at roughly the same time, but Beethoven’s repeated revisions caused them to appear in a different order. The First Concerto was dedicated to Princess Anna Louise Barbara Odescalchi, née Countess von Keglevich. Beethoven himself played the solo part at the premiere in Vienna on 18 December 1795.
