Bruch composed the Scottish Fantasy in Berlin over the winter of 1879–80, working from printed collections of Scottish airs; he never visited Scotland. Four traditional tunes carry the four movements, among them Auld Rob Morris and the patriotic Scots wha hae, and a harp is written into the orchestra to stand in for the clarsach. The dedication went to Pablo de Sarasate, who gave the first performances. Bruch was following a long European fashion — Haydn, Beethoven, Weber and Mendelssohn had all set or evoked Scottish material before him.
