Reinecke wrote the flute concerto in 1908, at eighty-four and two years before his death. Maximilian Schwedler, the Gewandhaus principal, gave the premiere in Leipzig on 15 March 1909 with the orchestra Reinecke had conducted for thirty-five years. Three contrasting movements: a bright, dreaming Allegro at an unhurried pace; a lament marked con dolore; and an energetic rondo. Reinecke knew the instrument well — the Undine sonata is his — and wrote no display piece but a work whose poetic quality has made it one of the most loved concertos flautists have.
