The manuscript is dated March 1828, but analysis of Schubert's paper places the work three years earlier, and a letter of his own mentions a large symphony written during the summer of 1825 at Gmunden and Bad Gastein. He dedicated it to the Vienna Society of Friends of Music, which paid him a hundred florins as a gesture rather than a fee, and never heard it played. Robert Schumann found the score among Ferdinand Schubert's papers in Vienna in 1839; Mendelssohn conducted the first performance in Leipzig on 21 March of that year.
