Stoyanov's Festive Overture was written for the fifteenth anniversary of 9 September 1944 — an occasion that is a matter of record rather than of content. It is built on sonata principles: a bright opening theme frames the sections, internal climaxes shape the dynamic relief, and a broad hymn-like coda closes the argument. The second thematic area, lyrical and epic, is developed motivically at length. The overture has stayed in Bulgarian orchestral programmes far longer than the anniversary that prompted it, and shows the composer's orchestral thinking at its most assured.
