Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, the Pathétique, stands at the summit of his symphonic writing. In a letter, he confessed that he had placed his whole soul in the work and had often wept while composing it. Its emotional course was understood as a reflection of life itself: ascent and collapse, hope and despair, love and hatred. He conducted its first performance nine days before his unexpected death. He never disclosed its secret programme, yet the music speaks with the force of a tragic human narrative — a life passing through struggle and transformation towards its inevitable end.
The score was finished at Klin on 12 August 1893, and Tchaikovsky conducted the first performance himself on 28 October in St Petersburg; he told his publisher Jurgenson that the audience had received it not as a failure but somehow with doubt. Recognition came at the memorial performance under Eduard Nápravník that followed. The symphony is dedicated to his nephew Vladimir Davydov. Its title came late — the composer found ‘programme symphony’ foolish and refused his brother Modest’s ‘Tragic’, then seized on the word pathétique when Modest murmured it the day after the premiere.
