The Second Symphony, in B flat major and subtitled May, was written in 1949 for string orchestra alone — an unusual choice for a composer whose reputation rested on full orchestral colour. It followed the political turn of the late 1940s in Bulgaria, when large affirmative works were expected of established composers, and its title points in that direction; the music itself is closer to the lyrical, folk-inflected string writing Vladigerov had used since the Bulgarian Suite. He wrote only two symphonies, the first dating from 1939.
