John Williams scored the first three films of the series, released in 2001, 2002 and 2004, and handed the work to other composers afterwards, though his themes were carried forward. Hedwig's Theme, written for celesta before the first film was shot, became the identifying music of the whole franchise. Double Trouble, from Prisoner of Azkaban, sets the witches' incantation from Macbeth for children's choir. For that third score Williams turned towards early music, using recorders, viols and dance rhythms that reach back past the orchestral idiom of the first two films. Concert suites drawn from the scores are widely played.
