Алмере

Almere developed on reclaimed land in Flevoland as a planned city intended to ease pressure on the Dutch Randstad. Temporary homes housed its first pioneers in 1975, while the first permanent houses were completed in 1976. The original plan envisaged several distinct urban centres rather than a single centre surrounded by suburbs. Almere Haven and Almere Stad consequently developed different scales and characters.

The city's later districts continued this interest in urban experimentation, including the self-build development at Oosterwold. Cultural facilities grew alongside the new neighbourhoods. Kunstlinie presents theatre, music, musicals and family performances, forming part of the cultural infrastructure of a city whose modern identity is closely connected with planning, architecture and reclaimed land.
