Атарфе

Atarfe's historical landscape includes the archaeological site of Medina Elvira, near Sierra Elvira in the Granada region. Excavations have revealed houses, streets and other remains of an early medieval urban settlement. Archaeological evidence points to occupation in the ninth and tenth centuries and to a gradual movement of population towards Granada, rather than a single abrupt transfer of an entire city. Medina Elvira was designated a protected archaeological zone in 2004.

The name remains visible in contemporary cultural life through the Centro Cultural Medina Elvira. Its exhibition spaces host public displays and educational activities, including programmes intended to bring historical objects and local heritage to wider audiences. The relationship between the archaeological site and the cultural centre gives Atarfe a clear connection between research into its past and the presentation of culture in the present.
