Białystok's professional orchestral tradition began in 1954 with the establishment of the State Symphony Orchestra. Initially without a permanent home, its musicians rehearsed and performed in venues including the drama theatre and the guest palace. After two decades the institution became the Białystok Philharmonic and moved into a concert hall on Podleśna Street.
The next major development was the creation of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic. The institution adopted its new name in 2005, and its new building opened on 28 September 2012. Its programme expanded to include opera, operetta and musicals while retaining symphonic concerts. Exhibitions and educational work broadened its public role. In 2019 the institution formally adopted Stanisław Moniuszko as its patron, linking its contemporary activity with a central figure in Polish opera.
