Bühl has a place in industrial history through the development of UHU adhesives. In 1905, the pharmacist August Fischer purchased a local chemical factory established by Ludwig Hoerth in 1884. His work led in 1932 to a clear synthetic-resin adhesive that became associated with the UHU name. The name refers to the eagle owl, following a practice of naming stationery products after birds. From this local enterprise grew a brand used in household repairs, schools, crafts and professional work. The history connects Bühl with the development of materials whose familiarity in everyday life can obscure their specific place of origin.
