Esch-sur-Alzette is the iron half of Luxembourg's fortune. The Minett — the "red lands" of the south, named for the ore that rusts the very soil — made the Grand Duchy an industrial power, and Esch was its furnace capital: a city of blast furnaces, workers' quarters and boulevard architecture built on steel wages, second in size only to the capital and prouder for it. When the furnaces cooled, Esch performed Europe's neatest conversion: at Belval, two great blast furnaces were kept as monuments — climbable, illuminated, magnificent — and the University of Luxembourg moved in beneath them, so that students now read where iron poured, the square kilometre of rust and glass becoming the country's emblem of reinvention. The city's year as European Capital of Culture in 2022 sealed the change of vocation.
The old centre keeps its ornamented facades — Art Nouveau and Art Deco earned by ore — and its stage: the Théâtre Municipal d'Esch, the venue documented in the concert record, whose seasons of theatre, dance and concerts have made the workers' city a full cultural address, in friendly rivalry with the capital up the motorway. Red earth, preserved fire, a university in a steelworks: Esch-sur-Alzette is heavy industry's best afterlife.
