Iron ore made Esch-sur-Alzette. Luxembourg's second city grew on the Minett basin along the French border, and both its wealth and its many-tongued population came out of the ground there. The municipal theatre is its principal stage — drama in several languages, dance, concerts and opera — and it carried a full share of the programme when Esch held the European Capital of Culture title in 2022.
