Harnes, in the coalfield of the Pas-de-Calais, belongs to the country that France dug rather than built. For a century and a half the town lived by its pits, and it lies within the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Mining Basin that UNESCO inscribed in 2012 — a World Heritage listing not of palaces but of slag heaps, pithead frames and miners' terraces, the honest monuments of labour. Twice destroyed in the world wars and twice rebuilt, Harnes keeps its memory carefully: a local museum preserves the story of the mine and of the town's ordeal, and the silhouette of the belfried town hall anchors a main square rebuilt in the sturdy brick of the reconstruction.

Music here has the accent of the mining north, where every pit town raised its harmonie — the wind band that marched at festivals, funerals and strikes alike, and that gave generations of working families their first instruments. That tradition of communal music-making survives the closed collieries: choirs, bands and the municipal school of music carry it on, and the Salle Prévert — the town's hall, named for the poet of ordinary lives, which suits Harnes exactly — serves as the stage where local ensembles and visiting artists meet. This is not a town that performs for visitors; it is a town that performs for itself, which is the older and rarer thing.
