Le Prévert in Harnes is a municipal cinema and cultural venue near the town's Grand' Place. Film screenings form the greater part of its programme, alongside discussions, documentary films and activities for school groups. The building also retains a place for live performance: the municipal programme includes the local wind band's spring concert, a theatre weekend with the town's companies and an Irish music concert. These uses make it a shared cultural space for cinema audiences, musicians and community theatre. Coal built Harnes, in the Pas-de-Calais basin where the pit heads have gone and the slag heaps have been listed as heritage, and the town's public buildings still speak of the municipal culture that came with mining. The hall named for the poet Jacques Prévert is where Harnes hears music — orchestral programmes among them, Beethoven's Coriolan overture included.
