The Paris Opera was founded in 1669 by Louis XIV as the Academie d'Opera and is now called the Opera national de Paris. It stages operas at the Opera Bastille, opened in 1989, and ballets and operas at the Palais Garnier, opened in 1875. The Orchestre de Paris performs concerts at the Philharmonie de Paris, whose 2,400-seat hall designed by Jean Nouvel opened in January 2015. The Festival d'Aix-en-Provence takes place each summer and is devoted mainly to opera.
