On the Sambre, in the Avesnois corner of the Nord where the old metalworking towns run one into the next towards the Belgian border, Hautmont keeps a municipal cultural centre of the type that carries a whole town's programme: theatre, film, the local school of music, civic occasions, and the orchestras that pass through on tour. Beethoven's 'Coriolan' overture has sounded in it.
