Rome founded Fréjus as Forum Iulii, a naval station on the coast of the Var, and left it an amphitheatre and an aqueduct that still cross the town; the modern theatre's name reaches back to that. Le Forum is run jointly with neighbouring Saint-Raphaël — which is what "intercommunal" means here — and its season mixes drama, dance, variety and touring opera for the two towns and their considerable summer population.
