Ландсберг ам Лех

Landsberg am Lech earns its Romantic Road billing the moment the river appears: the Lech pours over its long weir in a white curtain directly beneath the old town, whose pastel gabled façades rise from the water to the Bavarian gate — the Bayertor of 1425, among the finest medieval gate-towers in southern Germany, its sculpted tracery still guarding the eastern approach. The triangular main square, with the stucco-fronted town hall by the Wessobrunn master Dominikus Zimmermann — who served the town as mayor while building rococo Bavaria — belongs among the region's loveliest urban rooms.

The town's artistic patron chose it from abroad: Hubert von Herkomer, the Bavarian-born Victorian painting star, returned from London fame to build his mother's memorial tower — the Mutterturm, a romantic keep on the Lech's bank now housing his museum — giving Landsberg a singular Anglo-Bavarian art shrine. The salt road's medieval tolls built the town; the river's rushing energy still powers it.

History's darkest association — the fortress prison where Hitler, briefly jailed after 1923, dictated his manifesto — is treated by the town as an obligation of remembrance rather than a landmark. Landsberg's living calendar prefers its Ruethenfest, the great children's historical festival held every four years, and concerts in the historic halls between gate, square and waterfall.
