Мидделбург

Middelburg banked an empire and seeded a president. Zeeland's capital held the second-largest chamber of the East India Company — only Amsterdam outranked it — and the Golden Age port's abbey, town hall and merchant streets grew accordingly opulent; the "Lange Jan", the abbey's octagonal tower, still turns above the province like a lighthouse of prosperity. From villages in this island countryside the Roosevelt family emigrated to New Amsterdam in the 1640s, and Middelburg honours the return line: the Four Freedoms Awards — the international prize rooted in Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1941 speech — are presented here in the abbey in alternate years, presidents and laureates in a Zeeland nave, the town's Roosevelt study centre keeping the scholarship.

The twentieth century tested the town gravely: German bombardment in May 1940 burned the historic centre, and Middelburg's meticulous reconstruction — Gothic town hall and abbey restored stone by stone — became a model of heritage rebuilt. Today the capital of a sea-fighting province is a market town of arcades and antiquaries, ringed by Walcheren's dunes and the Delta works' engineering. The concert record's register — chamber concerts, church music, choirs, festival visits — suits the abbey's acoustics, where Zeeland's musical occasions naturally gather. An empire's second desk, a president's first soil: Middelburg's ledgers ran long.
