Градски театър Мидделбург

The Stadsschouwburg Middelburg stands on Molenwater and presents drama, cabaret, dance, concerts, opera and ballet. Its auditorium brings together a raked seating area, balconies and boxes, accommodating approximately six hundred spectators. A major renovation renewed both the interior and exterior and modernised the building’s technical facilities. The theatre reopened in October 2018. This project adapted the existing theatre for contemporary performance requirements while retaining an auditorium arranged for staged productions. The refurbished building continues to provide Middelburg with a venue for touring theatre and musical performance. Middelburg has had a theatre since 1807; it was rebuilt in 1939 and then replaced altogether by the building in use today, which opened on 22 January 1965 with Kiss Me Kate, played by the Nieuw Rotterdams Toneel. The local architect P. Götzen designed it, and the hall seats 550 on the floor and a single balcony. Drama, dance, ballet, opera and musical theatre make up the programme. Renovations followed in 2007 and again in 2017–2018.
