Paducah sits where the Tennessee River joins the Ohio — four great rivers converge within a few miles, which named the archive's hall — and it has turned needle and thread into international standing: in 2013 UNESCO designated Paducah a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, one of the first in the United States, in recognition of a quilting culture centred on the National Quilt Museum, whose astonishing contemporary quilts draw pilgrims from every continent; each spring the AQS QuiltWeek fills the town, and "Quilt City USA" is worn without irony.

The rivers that made the town also menaced it, and the response became its gallery: the concrete floodwall raised after the catastrophic 1937 flood now carries Wall to Wall, a series of large painted panels chronicling the city's history along the waterfront, from Chickasaw treaty days and the river trade to the Cold War, when the nearby atomic plant enriched uranium for a generation. The Luther F. Carson Four Rivers Center — recorded in this archive as the Four Rivers Center for the Performing Arts (a canonical-name note for the registry) — opened in 2004 as western Kentucky's concert hall, hosting the region's symphony and touring artists in view of the confluence. Quilts, murals and river light: Paducah stitched itself a future.
