Parkstein is the village on the volcano that Humboldt crowned. Alexander von Humboldt judged the Hoher Parkstein "the most beautiful basalt cone in Europe", and the compliment still fits: the Upper Palatinate hill rises in a perfect volcanic exclamation over the rooftops, its exposed flank a wall of basalt columns — polygonal organ-pipes of cooled magma, geology's most architectural gesture — with the village's lanes, church and former fortress terraces climbing the slope as if arranged for the view.
The summit carries the layered past: a chapel where the imperial castle stood — Parkstein was once the seat of a shared lordship administered by Wittelsbach and other powers in unusual condominium — with ruin fragments and the panorama across the Oberpfälzer hill country toward the Fichtelgebirge and Bohemia. At the cone's foot, the Vulkanerlebnis Parkstein museum explains the fire beneath the charm: eruption theatre, basalt lore and the region's volcanic chain presented with flair disproportionate to the village's size, making Parkstein the interpretive capital of Bavaria's extinct volcanoes.
Around it, the Landkreis's pond-and-granite country — carp waters, pilgrimage chapels, zoiglstern brewing villages — keeps Upper Palatinate customs within excursion reach. One street, one church, one perfect basalt cone: Parkstein proves that a village needs only a single superlative, provided Humboldt certifies it.
