An open-air theatre built against the basalt wall of the Parkstein volcanic cone in the Upper Palatinate, a columnar rock face, and now the backdrop for summer performances. Performances are given by the Basalttheater Parkstein association, formed by local players in 2001, which staged its first evening piece that same summer in the castle courtyard and moved to the ground at the foot of the rock face as audiences grew. Its repertory mixes folk plays, historical pieces written for the village, among them Parksteiner Streithammel of 2002 and Parkstein. Pest und Pulverdampf of 2005, and productions for children. The company received the cultural prize of the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district in 2006.
