Prishtina is Europe's youngest capital — a seat of statehood only since 2008. The energy is palpable: café terraces run the length of the Mother Teresa boulevard (the saint of Calcutta was an Albanian speaker, and her cathedral rises here), students fill the squares, and the NEWBORN monument, unveiled on independence day and repainted with a new design each year, has become the city's running self-portrait. The most photographed building is the National Library, a 1982 structure of domes and metal lattice that visitors have been arguing about for four decades — which is, of course, a form of love. The city's musical institutions are young and determined. The Kosovo Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 2000 as the new state's flagship ensemble, plays its seasons largely at the Youth Palace, whose Red Hall serves as Prishtina's principal concert stage — orchestra and hall both documented in the concert record. Pop culture amplifies the story: Prishtina's diaspora daughters Dua Lipa and Rita Ora headline the Sunny Hill Festival on the city's edge, global stars returning to a hometown audience that treats them as neighbours. A library like a puzzle, an orchestra younger than its players, a monument repainted annually: Prishtina is a capital still writing its first chapters, out loud.
