The Opera of Kosovo was established in August 2021, following sustained efforts by the country's musical community to create a public opera institution. Its inaugural concert took place on 1 November that year and included soprano Zana Abazi-Ramadani. During its initial development, a preparatory council worked on the institution's statute, artistic structure and programme, with Meriton Ferati serving as acting director. The company began without a dedicated opera house, making the provision of suitable performance facilities a central issue in its early history.
