Rzeszow builds wings in the Carpathian foothills. The capital of Podkarpacie anchors Poland's "Aviation Valley" — the cluster of engine and airframe plants, PZL's heirs among them, that makes the region a global supplier of flight — and the city wears the vocation openly, engineering faculties and runway economics under a Galician old town. That old town keeps its secrets below: the Underground Tourist Route threads the merchants' cellars, three storeys deep in places, dug from the Middle Ages onward beneath the market square, while the square above centres on the town hall's neo-Gothic tower and the summer multimedia fountain performs its evening son et lumière with municipal enthusiasm.
The musical establishment is the Podkarpackie Philharmonic — named for Artur Malawski, the region's composer — whose modern hall and garden host the orchestra's seasons and the city's festivals; the concert record lists "Podkarpackie Philharmonic" and "Filharmonia" separately, one institution in fact, flagged for the workbook. Around it, the university city's student population keeps the market square's cafés in argument, and the Bieszczady wilderness begins an hour south, Poland's emptiest mountains as weekend counterweight. Cellars below, turbines around, a philharmonic in a garden: Rzeszow is provincial Poland at cruising altitude.
