Fort Smith, on the Arkansas River at the Oklahoma line, has no opera company of its own. What it has instead is an endowed presenting body, which raises the money to bring touring productions to the city's stages and has put full-length opera before its audiences — Verdi's "Rigoletto" among them. Organisations of this kind account for much of the opera heard between the American coasts.
