Форт Смит, Арканзас

Fort Smith was the last stop of American law. Founded as a frontier post in 1817 where the Arkansas River meets the Poteau, it became the seat of the federal court for the Indian Territory — and from 1875 to 1896 Judge Isaac C. Parker, the "Hanging Judge", presided here over the wildest jurisdiction in the nation, while deputy marshals rode west into the badlands to bring back the accused. Among the greatest of them was Bass Reeves, the formerly enslaved lawman who arrested some three thousand fugitives and now rides in bronze downtown; the national United States Marshals Museum, opened on the riverfront in 2023, tells the whole saga. Fiction borrowed it too — True Grit begins in Fort Smith. The city's concert tradition centres on the Fort Smith Municipal Auditorium documented in this archive, the civic hall where touring orchestras and opera companies have long appeared; the "Cultural Arts Endowment" listed beside it in the source records is a presenting organisation rather than a venue (a note for the registry). The Fort Smith Symphony, Arkansas's oldest orchestra, completes the picture — law, legend and music on the old border.
