Cieza's town council bought the Capitol in August 1994 and closed it for a rebuild that ran from November 2009 to June 2013, when Queen Sofía reopened it; a touring Carmen reached the stage that October. It had opened in 1955 as a cinema of more than 1,500 seats, put up by the Martínez Camacho brothers on the site of an open-air summer cinema. Horacio Fernández del Castillo's remodelling left a main auditorium of 650 places and a studio of 150; the programme now runs from zarzuela to film.
