The Thalia-Theater in Albstadt-Tailfingen originated as a cinema opened in 1953. The town of Tailfingen acquired the building in 1962, but its conversion into a broader cultural venue came after the formation of Albstadt. In 1978 the municipal council decided to rebuild and extend the former cinema. The resulting theatre was inaugurated on 19 September 1984, creating a dedicated performance venue from a building associated with the post-war cinema boom. In the Swabian Jura, Albstadt was assembled in 1975 out of Ebingen, Tailfingen and their neighbours — a knitting and textile town spread across high, cold valleys. Its Thalia Theater belongs to that municipal fabric: a hall for touring drama, chamber concerts, cabaret and the societies that make up a small town's season, named, as many German provincial houses are, for the muse of comedy.
