Born in Lecco and trained at the Como conservatoire under Fiorenza Cedolins, then at the Accademia of the Teatro alla Scala with Luciana d'Intino and Marcelo Álvarez, the tenor Giovanni Sala won the AsLiCo competition in 2014 and took second prize at the Queen Sonja competition in Oslo in 2017. Mozart has been his ground — Tamino, Don Ottavio, Ferrando — and he has sung under Riccardo Muti and John Eliot Gardiner; his Verdi roles include Macduff at the Teatro Regio in Turin, and he made his Covent Garden debut as Alfredo in the 2025/26 season. On 3 June 2023 he sang with the Philharmonie Baden-Baden in Verismo: Arien und Duette, a programme of arias and duets shared with Sonya Yoncheva. He first appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 2023, as Tebaldo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, and Beethoven's Missa solemnis belongs to his concert work.
