Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz wrote his Viola Concerto in 1976. Trained as an organist, he taught at the Warsaw academy from 1954 and served as its rector, and his catalogue runs to concertos for most orchestral instruments, several symphonies, organ music and a large amount of writing for the church — an output shaped by teaching duties as much as by commissions. The viola concerto belongs to his later period, when he had moved away from the neoclassical manner of the 1950s towards a freer harmonic language while keeping traditional forms.
