Tony Renis wrote the music and Alberto Testa the words of Quando, quando, quando for the Sanremo Festival of 1962, where Renis sang it in the competition; it did not win. The song is a bossa nova, a form still new in Italy at the time, and its hook is a question repeated without an answer. An English version appeared the same year and opened the American market, after which it was recorded by Engelbert Humperdinck, Michael Bublé and dozens of others, becoming a standard rather than a period hit.
