Burgas

Burgas has a musical history shaped by orchestral, operatic and ballet performance. Its philharmonic became a state institution in 1947. Local opera developed through an amateur initiative whose production of Verdi's La traviata opened on 25 June 1955, and the opera gained state status in 1972. Ballet also established its own stage presence, with a first independent production in 1958. A mixed chorus was formed when the opera became a state musical institution. These stages of development show how community musical activity in Burgas grew into a professional organisation capable of presenting opera, operetta, ballet and works for younger audiences.
