Composer
Biography
Born in London into a musical family — his father a composer and organist, his brother the cellist Julian Lloyd Webber — he passed through Westminster School, a brief period at Magdalen College, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music. His partnership with the lyricist Tim Rice produced Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Song and Dance, Starlight Express, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard and School of Rock followed. Through the Really Useful Group he brought production, theatre ownership and rights management under one roof. Born in Kensington in 1948, he was a Queen's Scholar at Westminster and met Tim Rice in 1965; their first piece together was The Likes of Us, on the life of Thomas John Barnardo. Besides the stage works, he has written a Latin Requiem Mass and film scores among them Gumshoe and The Odessa File. He was knighted in 1992 and made a life peer in 1997, and his awards include Tony Awards, Grammys, an Academy Award, Olivier Awards and the Kennedy Center Honors of 2006. In 2018 he received an Emmy as an executive producer of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.
